Arroyo Grande Lions Club

In Memoriam

Lion John Michael McInerney

John Michael McInerney, 75, died peacefully in his sleep after a valiant three-year struggle with melanoma Tuesday morning, Jan. 6, 2010. The fourth of 17 children, John was born in the Bronx, N.Y. As a widower with two young daughters, John moved to the Los Angeles area in 1962. There he met and married his best friend, Marilyn, in 1963. Their daughter, Denise was born in 1965.

After he retired, John and Marilyn moved to Nipomo in 1988 and he became an avid golfer. He played golf three days a week and was tournament chairman of the Gold Coast seniors.

John was proud of his service with Lions International for 35 years. He was a member of the Studio City Lions for 15 years before joining the Arroyo Grande Lions Club, having served as its secretary for 17 years. He also served as District Secretary for two terms. He received various Lions awards, including the International President''s Award, Melvin Jones Fellow and Donald Snyder Award. Donald Snyder was co-founder of the student speakers contest; this award is usually paid for by the club, but members of John''s club chipped in to pay for it instead, for which he was especially grateful. He received the award the night Donald Snyder himself was being honored.

John is survived by his wife, Marilyn; daughters Dorine (Dave Suden), Debra Morris and Denise (Raul Gonzalez); and granddaughters Shoshanna and Richelle. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, and a sister.

In lieu of flowers, donations preferred to Jacqualyn Palchak Cancer Foundation, P.O. Box 1614 Pismo Beach, CA 93448.
